Earth Day, April 22, lands during the only week of the year when most Canadians actively think about climate. The trick is using that attention well. Forget “turn off lights for an hour” — here are 10 actions that genuinely matter, ranked by impact, plus the Canadian events and organizations worth your time.

Earth Day in Canada: the state of our environment

Environment and Climate Change Canada’s 2024 progress report shows Canada’s emissions down about 8% from 2005 levels — well off the 40–45% reduction target by 2030. We’re also one of the world’s highest per-capita emitters.

The good news is most of the gap can be closed by federal-level policy and large industrial decisions. The civic and personal levers below help — and they shift demand in ways that change those policies.

10 Earth Day actions that actually matter

1. Vote. The largest single climate decision a Canadian household makes is which government holds power. Federal, provincial and municipal each move different levers.

2. Switch your savings. Move RRSP/TFSA/RRSP-DSP money out of fossil-fuel-heavy index funds into ESG or climate-screened funds. Canadian options include NEI Investments and the iShares ESG MSCI Canada ETF (XESG).

3. Insulate. If you own, the Canada Greener Homes Loan provides interest-free financing up to $40,000 for retrofits. Insulation pays back fastest.

4. Eat less beef. Cutting red meat from daily to weekly is the highest-leverage personal-diet change measured in CO2-equivalent. Canadian guidance, dietitian-approved, is in our spring dinner guide.

5. Take transit, bike or walk one trip a week. Most household car emissions come from short trips that could be replaced.

6. Skip air travel for a year. One transcontinental round-trip flight is roughly equivalent to a year of beef.

7. Volunteer with a local org. Climate-aligned local groups (waterkeepers, parks councils, transition towns) need bodies, not just dollars.

8. Donate. If you can give $50 today: David Suzuki Foundation, Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society, West Coast Environmental Law.

9. Buy fewer, better things. The fast-fashion math from our slow-fashion summer guide applies to electronics, furniture and decor too.

10. Talk about it. Climate communication research consistently finds that talking with friends and family shifts political and policy outcomes more than online activism.

Earth Day events across Canada in 2026

Sponsored

Most Canadian cities run Earth Day cleanup days, climate marches, and tree-planting events the weekend nearest April 22. Toronto’s annual Earth Day at Riverdale Park, Vancouver’s Stanley Park cleanup, Montréal’s Jour de la Terre rally and Halifax’s Point Pleasant Park cleanup all run regularly.

For events near you: jourdelaterre.org, earthday.ca, and your municipal recreation department’s spring calendar.

The best Canadian environmental organizations to support

David Suzuki Foundation — broad climate, oceans and biodiversity work. Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society — protects wild spaces. West Coast Environmental Law — legal advocacy for BC. Équiterre — Quebec-based, broad climate and food. Indigenous Climate Action — Indigenous-led climate organizing.

Making Earth Day every day

The actions in this list aren’t one-day actions. The point of Earth Day is to use the cultural attention to install one new habit per year — a bike commute, a meatless Monday, an investment switch, a yearly donation. Twenty Earth Days from now those compound.

The bottom line

Earth Day works if it makes one new climate habit stick. Pick one of the 10 actions above and make it your 2026 install.
